Your switch-off questions, answered

What is the PSTN switch-off?

The PSTN is the UK's old copper telephone network. Openreach is retiring it, along with ISDN, and moving everyone to digital lines. 31 January 2027 is the final date for migration orders.

I already have broadband. Am I affected?

Possibly. Older ADSL and many FTTC broadband services run alongside an old phone line and are affected too. Equipment like alarms and card machines may still be plugged into a copper line even if your phones have moved. An audit tells you for certain.

What happens if I do nothing?

ISDN lines are ceased from 1 February 2027. Remaining single lines may be moved to a basic emergency voice service that costs more and may not support your equipment. Alarms, lifts and card machines can stop working without warning.

Will I keep my phone numbers?

In almost all cases, yes. Numbers can be moved to a digital service. Your plan will show which numbers to move and when.

Do you sell phone lines or phone systems?

No. We are independent. Our job is to tell you what you need, not to sell it to you. You can use your plan with your current provider or any other.

What about power cuts?

Digital phone lines need power. If you rely on a line for an alarm, lift or vulnerable person, you may need battery backup. We flag these items in your audit.

Is it safe to send you my phone bill?

Yes. We use it only for your audit, store it securely, never share or sell it, and delete it when the job is done. See our Strict Confidentiality & Privacy Policy. You can also hide call details before sending.

How quickly will I get my results?

Within 2 working days of receiving your bill (Virtual Audit), or 3 working days after our visit (Site Audit).

Are you part of BT or Openreach?

No. 2027PSTNswitchoff.co.uk is an independent telecoms consultancy.
